Conventions of a Horror Movie

Orphan Poster
The conventional colours for the Horror genre would be black and red, the black to represent the darkness and red to represent blood and gore. Horror films have many different locations, they are mostly set in houses, graveyards, and night times for darkness. The conventional Costumes would be a mask and dark leather clothing for the bad person but the victim would have bright, peaceful colours to make them look innocent. For the props, they would use violent things, for cereal killers, they would use big sharp weapons like a machete, sometimes they use guns. Examples of Horror Films are Paranormal Activities, Orphan, Hostel.

Different Film Marketing Methods and what they are suitable for

1. The marketing methods I can remember from today are:

  • The Dark Knight Viral Marketing Campaign, it involved people from around the US participating in a campaign that was like a game, players had to find clues and save/take over Gotham. Some people would choose to use things like:
Games
Toys
Websites
Adverts
  • Video Games 2.Today I learned that some film marketing methods are suited to particular audience. For example: Creating a Video Game for the film whose audience is 12 and older because most teenagers are interested in Video Games.

3. Today I learned that some film marketing methods are suited to particular genres of film. For example:
  • Having a Scary Video Game for a film is best suited to a film which is from the Horror genre because people who play games and they play the game for the film would be interested in watching it.
  • Having Toys for a film is best suited to a film which is from the cartoon genre because if children get the toy in a Happy Meal and they like it they would want to watch the film.

Viral Marketing Campaign

The term “viral” describes the way a message can become self-replicating as it is picked up and repeated across the Internet. it could basically such as pictures, websites or video clips.
3 examples of films that have used viral marketing:

The Blair Witch Project (1999)

They made a viral website so people would believed that the film is based on a real story. Viral Website: http://blairwitch.com/legacy.html

Cloverfield (2008)
They made a viral website, in the website there are pictures... so people would believe that film is real.

High Budget Marketing Campaigns

  • High budget film will have a lot of of money to buy props and to hired actors for the making of the film and that that film will be good.
  • High budget marketing campaign is when the company spend a lot of money for promoting the film before the film comes out in the cinemas.
  • Spider Man 3 had a budget of 260 Million Dollars, it is an interesting film because a lot of people went to watch it.
  • Avatar is also a good film because a lot of merchandises and a lot of people went to watch it and it had a budget of 237 million Dollars
  • Titanic is a good old film and everyone knows about it and it was promoted because it was a real life story and people felt sad it had a budget 200 Million Dollars

Low Budget Marketing Campaigns

  • A low budget film normally have a very low budget, could be as low as £100, home films normally have a very low budget.
  • Low budget film marketing campaign are films that have a very low amount of money to spend in the making of the film.
  • Paranormal Activities: because they used one place to film it and they only needed some furniture and actors.
The Blair Witch Project: because they filmed it in a forest and they did not have to pay to use the place.
  • They might want to make a more profit than loss, they do want to use more money to make the film because they want to earn a lot of money when it is released.
  • It seems to be best for people who like watching reality movies, serious movies, normal movies (no superheroes etc..)

Film Marketing Research

  1.  Film Marketing is anything that is used to advertise a film and gives some information to the audience, e.g. Trailers, Posters etc.
  2. Film Posters are posters that people use to advertise a film, this could include the name of the film, pictures, scenes and the age rating.

    Inception Poster      Casino Royale Poster
  3. A film trailer is a short video that people use to advertise a film and show the audience some scenes from the film, They also tell the audience what the film is about. The Film trailer I have chosen is very good because it shows a lot of information and includes most of the best scenes in the movie.
    http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi4219471385/
  4. Film Merchandise are the objects that are sold in shops that have something to do with the film. e.g. Mug, Posters, T-Shirts, Toys.
South Park Talking Sound mug              Disney Pixar Cars 2 Trolley (can be personalised)
  5. A film website is the page people would go on to find out what the film is about and to look at the trailer and find out other things about producers/ directors etc...
    website: http://www.steelgetsreal.co.uk/
  6. Film companies make apps for phones, the iPhone has many apps, film companies make games for the iPhone. e.g. Iron Man, Fast and Furious, Star Wars. Apps also make the film companies money because people would buy the games and the companies receive the money.

  7. In Time Poster
The title is In Time and they have different things in the poster that represent time, (Numbers), The colours are black and white with light green to represent the numbers and make them stand out from the rest of the poster, the font looks like a digital time font and that links to the movie name, it shows the two main characters in the story and shows the actors names under the Film Title.
